Following its premiere in Dublin in 1742, Messiah quickly became one of Handel’s most popular pieces of music and has been performed around the globe every year since 1945.
This year, Lincoln Choral Society are joining Lincoln Cathedral Choir to perform Handel’s Messiah, a spectacular piece of music which is to be accompanied by Lincolnshire Chamber Orchestra.
Messiah features one of the most famous pieces of choral music, the Hallelujah Chorus, however this piece has so much more to offer. In most of Handel’s oratorios, the choir sing brief choruses but it is the soloists who dominate. Messiah differs in the fact that it is made up of striking solo arias, interspersed with captivating chorus numbers telling the story of Jesus’ birth, life, death and victorious resurrection.
During Victorian times, a trend arose with Messiah being performed by larger and larger musical companies, almost as if a competition was running to see how big an orchestra could get before the stage collapsed.
We can guarantee our Messiah concert will hold the music beautifully, so you can immerse yourself in the incredible acoustics of the Cathedral’s Nave, as this is sure to be an unforgettable evening.
